At Mountain Khakis, the history and names of our products hold significant meaning. Just as we meticulously craft our apparel, we carefully consider the significance behind each product name.
Some of our flagship franchises have stood the test of time, earning the trust of our customers for decades. The Mountain Pant, our original design, has been a cornerstone of our brand for over 20 years. The Teton Twill and the Camber series have been beloved staples for over a decade. While we have made adjustments over time to ensure these styles meet market expectations for fit, we also strive to make environmentally conscious changes. About eight years ago, we transitioned the Mountain Pant to organic cotton to align with our commitment to being responsible stewards of our planet.
Our latest collection, the all-new Rover, embodies an evolution of styles you've come to know and love, including the LODO, the Larimer, and the Commuter. Drawing inspiration from these past styles, the Rover series represents a fusion of design concepts, resulting in a versatile and functional product line.
Available as pants, hybrid pants, and shorts, the Rover series is tailored for the modern Journeyman. We've taken into account how you travel, and incorporated lessons learned from past iterations to create the ultimate Rover series. By analyzing competitive products and identifying areas for improvement, we're confident that the Rover series sets a new standard for quality and performance in outdoor apparel.
The word "Rover" carries a rich history and a multitude of meanings, making it a fascinating subject of exploration. Originating from Old English and Middle Dutch roots, "Rover" initially referred to someone who wanders or roams without a fixed destination, embodying a spirit of adventure and exploration. Over time, the term evolved to encompass various contexts, reflecting its versatility and adaptability.
In nautical terminology, a Rover was a pirate or privateer who prowled the seas in search of plunder and adventure. This maritime connection infuses the word with a sense of daring and excitement, evoking images of swashbuckling sailors navigating treacherous waters in pursuit of fortune and glory. In modern usage, "Rover" often denotes a person or vehicle that travels freely and independently, exploring new territories and embracing the unknown.
Beyond its literal meanings, "Rover" also carries metaphorical connotations, symbolizing a willingness to venture beyond one's comfort zone and embrace new experiences. In the realm of outdoor adventure, a Rover embodies the spirit of exploration and discovery, inspiring individuals to seek out uncharted landscapes and forge their own paths. Whether embarking on a wilderness expedition or navigating the urban jungle, the Rover mindset encourages curiosity, resilience, and a thirst for discovery.
Pretty perfect when you consider “the why” – a complete alignment in the values important to our brand, the history of the term, and our intended use case – built for the Journeyman. We understand our customer: you move fast, seek versatility, and prioritize efficient packing when traveling. The Rover is comfortable both on the road and at your destination.
Specific to the product, let’s examine the zippered security pockets. We have two. The first zippered pocket is located on the wearer's side, underneath the main right-hand side hip pocket. Perfect for passports, cash, or anything you want to stash securely. This pocket is easily accessible, ensuring you're not sitting on your belongings during long-haul trips.
The second zippered security pocket is on the wearer's backside, offering additional flexibility. If you prefer not to overload the side pocket while on your feet, this second option is ideal for carrying a wallet or other items you're comfortable sitting on when taking a break.
Providing both options reflects our commitment to detail and comfort. We strive to offer the best in pants because we use this gear ourselves! Our high standards strive for perfection, delivering comfort and durability through features like our diamond action gusset crotch for travel comfort and stretch throughout the entire Rover family for flexibility. Stretch not only enhances comfort but also boosts durability, ensuring our gear flexes before it fails. At Mountain Khakis, we aim to exceed your expectations with every release, prioritizing your comfort and satisfaction.
We have two fabric options (Rover Pant & Short or Rover Hybrid), and none of them include Polyester. This is a big difference; our blended weave relies on nylon, not polyester. Nylon boasts exceptional durability and strength, making it highly resistant to abrasion and tearing. This durability ensures that nylon garments maintain their integrity even after repeated wear and washing, prolonging their lifespan and offering long-term value to our consumers. Additionally, nylon exhibits excellent elasticity and resilience, allowing garments to stretch and recover their shape without sagging or stretching out of form.
Moreover, nylon offers superior moisture-wicking properties compared to polyester, effectively drawing sweat away from the body and allowing it to evaporate quickly. This moisture management capability helps to keep the wearer dry and comfortable during physical activity or in warm conditions, making nylon apparel ideal for outdoor activities. Furthermore, nylon fabric is lightweight and breathable, enhancing overall comfort and allowing for better airflow to the skin. These qualities combine to make nylon garments a practical and comfortable choice for a wide range of activities, from hiking, fishing, travel and of course everyday wear. Caught in the rain or headed to the tropics in wet-season – go for the Rover Hybrid. Need the perfect pant for travel, dressing up for a dinner at the resort or even a business meeting – go for the Rover Pant.
Another benefit? Nylon is oleophobic, meaning it repels oils. Oleophobic materials are resistant to oils and oily substances, making them less likely to absorb oil-based stains and easier to clean. This property makes nylon our choice at Mountain Khakis where resistance to oil and stains is important. Oils, including body odor or sweat, stain and smells – nylon’s oleophobic properties are important to us as the fibers naturally repel these oils.
Try them for yourself! Make sure you check out the all-new Rover collection as the journey continues with Mountain Khakis. We’re incredibly proud of the Pant, the Hybrid Pant, and the Short – and we can’t wait to continue building out our Rover series in future seasons!

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES, AND THE ADVENTURE IS ETERNAL
Stepping into Congaree feels like a journey back in time. It's a place where the echoes of modern life fade, and nature's whispers take center stage. The park's serenity is unlike any other we've experienced, owing partly to the dense forest that envelops it and its relatively recent designation as a National Park in 2003.
]]>As the seasons transition from winter's chill to the blossoming warmth of spring, outdoor enthusiasts like myself are faced with the challenge of adapting to the unpredictable weather. It's during this in-between time that heavier weight shirts and shirtjacs prove to be the perfect companions for outdoor adventures. At Mountain Khakis, we understand the importance of versatile and durable outdoor gear, which is why our Moleskin ShirtJac, Hamilton Chamois shirt, and heavier weight flannels are essential pieces for embracing the changing seasons.
The Mountain Khakis Moleskin ShirtJac is a true testament to rugged versatility. Crafted from durable moleskin fabric, this ShirtJac offers the perfect balance between warmth and breathability, making it ideal for those transitional days when the temperature fluctuates. It’s my go to for a hike through the woods or gathering around the campfire with friends, the Moleskin ShirtJac provides reliable protection against the elements while exuding timeless style. My favorite feature is the hand pockets on the side-seam which are simply awesome. Hand warmth and storage, it’s a great ShirtJac.
For those seeking unparalleled comfort and durability, our Hamilton Chamois shirt is the ultimate choice. Made from soft yet rugged chamois fabric, this shirt is designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures while keeping warm and protected against abrasion. The Hamilton’s 8.5-ounce heavyweight construction makes it perfect for layering during cooler mornings and evenings, and if the weather does warm up, I just open up the front buttons to wear it like a jacket which I think looks great. My favorite is the clay color, makes me easy to spot if I’m out with friends or coming across other people in the woods.
In addition to our Moleskin ShirtJac and Hamilton Chamois shirt, our collection of heavier weight flannels offers another versatile option for in-between seasons. My favorite from this season is the Highland Field Shirt. With the double layered, reinforced front and back yoke it’s a nod to a traditional hunting shirt that features durable construction and classic style. I like the Forest Moss color a lot when I’m wanting to blend in with nature around me without disturbing the peaceful sounds of the outdoors.
Whatever your favorite, our flannels are designed to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Whether you're tackling a challenging trail or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll through the around the lake with your dog, our heavier shirts and flannels provide the perfect combination of warmth, comfort, durability, and style.
As outdoor enthusiasts, we understand the importance of having reliable gear that can adapt to changing conditions. With our Moleskin ShirtJac, Hamilton Chamois shirt, and my favorite Highland Field Shirt, you can confidently embrace the in-between seasons and continue your outdoor adventures in style. So, gear up with Mountain Khakis and make the most of every outdoor moment, no matter the weather.
We live in confusing times in a confusing world. Augmented reality and Artificial Intelligence have crept into positions to replace actual reality. Facts and truth have been superseded by opinion. Abbreviations and portmanteaus only confuse things further when we consider the clothes that we wear. This is particularly true when we consider the humble shirtjac.
Shirt-jac, jac-shirt, shacket, shirt-jacket. Shirtjac. Are these all the same? How did we get to such confusion about what to call a garment? When does one wear such a creature? Well, dear friends and loved ones, read on to find out.
Clothing has evolved tremendously since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Manufacturing technologies and techniques allowed for vast improvements in the quality, durability, and consistency of the clothes purchased and worn by consumers. Design trends and materials benefitted from global exploration and trade (see our earlier piece on the Brief History of Blue Jeans as an example). What is now worn as much for comfort and ease of use/styling began as a simple jacket worn by hard-working wage earners to protect their personal clothes; the shirtjac ( as we prefer to spell the word, your mileage may vary) came to life more than 150 years ago in the same country that gave us the Etch A Sketch, the Stethoscope, Aspirin, Ratatouille, Champagne, the stapler and the list goes on: France.
There was little, if any, delineation between the clothes worn to work and those worn for personal ventures for vast segments of the working classes throughout the world. Indeed, many people wore the same clothes day in and day out. Protecting those necessities while on the job would not only protect the person wearing the clothes but would save time and resources from having to mend or replace clothing- processes that were not always feasible.
As economies boomed, workforces transitioned from agricultural to industrial work. Shop aprons were replaced by heavier, hard-wearing jackets and pants to hold up to the rigors of oftentimes dangerous, dirty work in factories with little concept of safety or best practices. Modern day shirtjacs trace their lineage back to the tightly woven cotton moleskin jacket with oversized front pockets to carry hand tools. An exterior chest pocket was added to allow a notebook or something similar to be kept close by. Dyed in a newly created low-cost blue, known as Berlin Blue, this factory provided jacket was dubbed the “Bleu de Travail” or Work Blues.
The choice of moleskin was simple. Cotton moleskin is renowned for being durable thanks to the tight weave of the fibers. It is easy to mend should a tear or snag happen. Early iterations moleskin date back to the days of Caesar and Cleopatra; known as “fustian” and differentiated from other fabrics by their strength owed to the increased number of weft threads. Moleskin is among those unique fabrics that can be worn with reasonable comfort year-round with some thought given to what is worn under or over depending on the conditions. Denim and other canvas fabrics were used throughout Europe and the rest of the industrialized world as the shirtac found its way into other markets via sailors and merchants.
As the Industrial Revolution gave way to the Gilded Age and then Progressive Era in America history making changes were on the horizon. Democracy and the rise of the Middle Class were on the march. As was Isolationism, The Roaring Twenties, the Stock Market Crash and subsequent Great Depression, Fascism, and World War II. Through such a period of unprecedented growth, turmoil, and change the shirtjac remained. More than ever there was a need for clothing that was affordable for the consumer while holding up to the rigors of work.
Allied field uniforms borrowed queues from the nearly 100-year-old shirtjac to become field shirts or field shirt jackets. Iterations can be seen in US Military BDUs and predecessor uniforms such as the M1943 Uniform & M 1942 Paratrooper Uniform widely used in the second half of WWII by the Greatest Generation; the OG-107 and its iconic M-1965 Field Jacket would cement the shirtjac in its rightful place as one of the true classics.
With the help of the Bleu de Travail, and the courage of those who came before us, we have the time & space to consider how and when to wear the shirtjac. No longer is it simply a durable shirt-weight jacket worn to protect our clothes, it is a boldly designed premium-built garment that sets the wearer apart from the masses of puffer ski jackets, hoody sweatshirts, and overcoats.
The Dover Wool Shirtjac from Mountain Khakis is a striking blend of warmth and protection from the elements and the classic look & feel of a 70/30 wool blend. Two hand warmer pockets with quick-dry fleece lining and two chest pockets make it as versatile as it is stylish.
Our cotton herringbone outer with quilted liner makes the Lincoln Shirtjac ready for cooler evenings outside, looking sharp on the way to work, or when you want warmth combined with tasteful styling.
The Mountain Khakis Norris Shirtjac blends our cozy sweater fleece fabric with the functional style of a shirtjac. Easily worn over a lighter weight shirt just as you would wear a fleece pullover, but with the added benefit of button snaps to make it easier to wear.

Dear Friends, Fans & Family of Mountain Khakis!
As 2023 draws to an end we want to thank you for your support of the Mountains Khakis brand and business. What a year it was.
As a 100% proudly American owned small business we truly made some great progress in the last 12 months. 2023 was for sure our most productive year post-pandemic.
Aside from being productive, 2023 was our 20th anniversary and we hope you had the chance to celebrate with us! Our product team did an amazing job with a series of limited-edition releases, some of which are still available on our website. Highlighting our proud American culture we released a Legacy Knife, Whiskey Glasses, Hip Flasks, and other drinkware with Oowwee and Stanley. With American Hat Makers we released “The Original Mountain Hat” made in the USA with a beautiful rigid felt that features a hat band made from the same canvas we use for our Mountain Pants. Really thoughtful, really special.
We released the “Journeyman Luggage Collection” in collaboration with Cross Canvas, a veteran owned and operated business out of Asheville, North Carolina. The collection sold out and we have recently restocked for the Holidays!
Speaking of Asheville, we signed on with Asheville based Darby Communications a PR Agency that has been doing an amazing job circulating our products to different publications nationwide. We’ve proudly been featured in Expedition Portal, Field Mag, Magnetic Magazine, Gear Lab, and Gear Junkie amongst others – it’s been amazing to see our products get rave reviews. Thanks to Darby for helping us get our gear circulated more broadly and put to the test!
Nothing says 20th anniversary more than a party! We kicked off the celebrations with Divine Barrel as we released the “Legacy Pale Ale” in September and held events to try on our pants and try the beer with different retail partners in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Colorado. The beer was our third collaboration over the years, and like the two before, the Legacy Pale Ale quickly sold out!
We wrapped up the celebrations on December 1st with an amazing event at Great Wagon Road Distilling Co. where we released our Legacy Whiskey. A single barrel 4-year old bourbon style Whiskey it’s smooth and oakey and wonderful. The limited-edition single-barrel release sold out within two weeks after the release party. The party was pretty epic – headlined by Swamptooth Band out of Savannah Georgia and their big vibe bluegrass sound!
Undoubtedly our most important progress this year was our commitment to significantly increase our investment in the wholesale channel. The wholesale team supports outdoor specialty retailers across America and Canada, and these specialty retailers are not only small businesses, but they are also primarily family-owned. These retailers, and the people who run them, are THE most important people in the outdoor industry. They create and cultivate local communities, and quite simply they are the gateway to the local outdoor playgrounds including National & State Parks, Public Lands, Lakes, and Rivers. They offer expert advice, guidance, and tips for all you need to know to maximize the beautiful world around you. They enhance your experience, and they make sure you have the right apparel & gear. In 2023 we added a new Director of Sales, Justin Julian, and we added over 20 additional Sales Representatives to support and service these Outdoor Specialty Retailers. This investment is a big step forward for us making sure the channel is properly supported as we enhance the outdoor experience for all Mountain Khakis customers right across North America. We are beyond excited to optimize our relationship and support for Outdoor Specialty retailers for years to come!
In conclusion, our 20th year was special. Aside from continuing to deliver great products, we delivered our new strategic plan for investors through 2026 – a plan that is built on doing an even better job building great products, that also sees future releases of new categories and products starting in the coming Spring that our whole team is really excited about.
We want to thank all our customers and supporters of our business for continuing to make great choices. We want to thank all our staff (past & present) as we continue to build on the Mountain Khakis legacy, and we also want to send a special thanks to the families of our staff who support us, and our mission. As we outfit and inspire all those passionate about the outdoors, we wish you a happy and safe Holiday, a Merry Christmas, and great success and health for the year ahead. We appreciate you, and we look forward to continuing our adventure together.
Kind Regards,
Jeremy Hale
President

Stepping into Congaree feels like a journey back in time. It's a place where the echoes of modern life fade, and nature's whispers take center stage. The park's serenity is unlike any other we've experienced, owing partly to the dense forest that envelops it and its relatively recent designation as a National Park in 2003.
]]>Grand Teton National Park is a place that has left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the Mountain Khakis brand. From our perspective, this majestic park stands as a testament to nature's grandeur and resilience.
Nestled amidst the dramatic backdrop of the Teton Range, the park offers a unique blend of mountain vistas to the west and sweeping plains and rolling hills to the east. While smaller in size compared to its neighbor Yellowstone, Grand Teton poses a delightful challenge: choosing which trail to explore first.
Accessing Grand Teton is relatively straightforward; you can fly directly into Jackson, a regional airport, or opt for a larger airport like Salt Lake City. During our recent adventure, we chose to fly into Bozeman, MT, embarking on a scenic drive to Yellowstone and then to Grand Teton. Looking back, we'd recommend flying directly into Jackson to savor every moment this park has to offer.
TETON RANGE: The iconic Teton Range graces the Wyoming landscape with its awe-inspiring peaks, most notably the majestic Grand Teton. For adventurers, this backdrop of unparalleled beauty promises unforgettable experiences.
JENNY LAKE: Nestled within the embrace of the Teton Range, Jenny Lake exudes serenity with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the towering peaks. It's a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, offering tranquil shores and scenic trails. We particularly recommend taking the boat across Jenny Lake to access the Jenny Lake Loop trail. Along the way, you'll encounter Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, with the latter providing a breathtaking perspective of the park.
MORMON ROW: Wyoming's Mormon Row stands as a historical testament, its iconic weathered barns and rustic structures blending seamlessly with the grandeur of the Teton Range. We suggest visiting at sunset for a truly spectacular view as the sun sets behind the Tetons.
WHERE TO GEAR UP: For all your outdoor needs, JD High Country Outfitters serves as a one-stop shop for hiking, fishing, and camping gear. Plus, you can find any Mountain Khakis gear you may have forgotten to pack.
WHERE TO EAT: While we may not be foodies, Leek's Marina & Pizzeria on the north end of the park captured our hearts with its great pizza, draft beer, and an unbeatable view. If you're passing through downtown Jackson, don't miss Cowboy Coffee Co. for a satisfying refuel.
If Grand Teton National Park is on your travel list, consider this your sign to book your trip. You won't regret immersing yourself in the grandeur and serenity of this remarkable destination.

]]>Congaree National Park, the elusive gem hidden within the heart of South Carolina, had long been on our list of must-visit places. Despite its proximity to our hometown of Charlotte, NC, the demands of daily life had kept it just out of reach. But in December of 2021, the stars aligned, and we finally made the journey.

For those seeking aquatic adventures, Congaree unveils its "blue-trails" or waterway trails, meandering through North America's largest congregation of champion trees. With varying trail lengths, you can paddle beneath the colossal giants that grace the nation's landscape. Keep in mind that Congaree has no concessionaires, so bringing your kayak or canoe is essential. Fortunately, Columbia boasts several outfitters that offer kayak rentals and guided trips.
We make pants. Damn fine ones if you ask us. Whether you call them trousers, slacks, pants, britches, breeches, breeks, trews, cacks, or any of the myriad other names available to this ubiquitous piece of clothing comprised of material covering each leg separately from waist to ankle and bound around the waist, you may have never thought about the history of pants.
So, buckle up, we’re about to get into some obscure, and fascinating, history.
The oldest known physical example of pants was discovered in the Tarim Basin of China. Carbon dating estimates that the two pairs are more than 3,000 old. Further examination of the garments indicated that the pants were constructed of only 3 pieces of fabric with no obvious stitching; the legs and crotch pieces were joined on the loom meaning that these were especially bespoke pants. Hints of belt loops were also discovered.
These wide, straight leg pants were discovered in a region associated with the Silk Road from your school history lessons. Vast amounts of commerce, war, and migrations of peoples have marked this region that was known as the Western Region until the 1880’s. It stands to reason that given the volume of trade and conflicting influences this region has experienced over the millennia that even older pants could be discovered in the arid plains of the Tarim Basin.
The Achaemenid Empire city of Persepolis, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, found in modern Iran has recorded examples of artwork and rock carvings dating to the sixth century BC showing nomads of both sexes wearing pants. Ancient Greeks referred to these garments as anaxyrides when worn by nomads of more eastern Asia, and sarabara for the Scythian and Pontic Steppe peoples. The primary differences are the materials used and the width of each pant leg. The Ancient Greeks generally disdained pants, calling them all thulakos, or sack, and preferred to wear tunics and robes.
The Romans continued with the Greek tradition of wearing a himation in various forms. Himations could be worn as a stand-alone garment and are typically featured in Biblical representations of women’s dress, in particular, the Virgin Mary. Roman togas are a variation of this noticeably non-pants garment. But as the Roman Empire expanded into the colder climes of Europe and the British Isles soldiers adopted the Braccae and Feminalia worn by the Barbarians we know as Celtis and Teutons. Early examples of trews appear on Volubilis’ triumphal arch which shows a Caledonia Pict prisoner wearing tartan trews. Trews would remain a staple of Scottish Highland dress for centuries and are likely the origin of the word trouser.
As the Roman Empire waned the proliferation of pants continued. Now made from leather, wool, cotton, or silk and featuring a tight cuff at the ankle or with foot coverings (just like your footie pajamas from childhood) and were known as brais. Charlemagne wore pants under his ceremonial tunics so frequently that it became fashionable for men’s pants to not be seen; as the pants became briefer (shorter, and perhaps the root of the modern underwear term), they were worn in conjunction with medieval hose or stockings.
By the fourteenth century, we have reached what could be considered a fashion low tide. Sure, the materials and colors were vibrant and unique. Men’s leggings were frequently high-waisted and exceptionally tight. So tight that undergarments were done away with and were once again generally a three-piece construction- 2 independent legs and the separate fastening codpiece.
In 1701 Russian Tsar Peter the Great issued his new dress code requiring Russian men to wear pants. Only the clergy and some peasant farmers were excluded from the nationwide mandate to adopt “Western dress” which included guidelines for French or Saxon style shirts and “upper dress” and German style waistcoats, trousers, and boots for “lower dress”. Pants were having a moment even if by royal decree.
Nearing the end of that same century in France, the ankle-length working-class pantaloons became emblematic of the French Revolution while the shorter culottes played the aristocratic foil. Following the revolution in France British fashion advisor and designer Beau Brummel helped move the pantaloon into acceptable menswear known as breeches. Remnants of breeches can still be seen in British court dress as well as in the uniform bottoms of American football players, baseball players, as well as by many competitive equestrians.
At first glance, a shirtjac looks like a standard button-up shirt. It sports a collared neck, buttons, or snaps down the front, and often comes in various colors and patterns. However, upon closer inspection, you'll notice that a shirtjac is designed to be more like a jacket. It is thicker, sturdier, roomier, and more robust than your everyday button-up. In many cases, they even have on-seam or interior pockets, hence the name Shirtjac.

Whether you're strolling through a city park, embarking on a weekend adventure, or gathering around a campfire, a shirtjac offers the perfect blend of style, warmth, and comfort. Designed with layering in mind, it is a transitional-weather wardrobe essential, perfect for those in-between seasons when you need just the right amount of warmth without the bulk of a traditional jacket.
Shirtjacs are crafted from a variety of materials, with some common choices being cotton, flannel, wool, or even synthetic blends. The choice of material for the exterior, and for the lining, often dictates the shirtjac's suitability for different weather conditions. For example, a sherpa-lined, or quilted shirtjac might keep you cozy during chilly autumn evenings, while an un-lined cotton or wool one offers a more breathable option for milder weather.
One of the most appealing aspects of shirtjacs is their style versatility. They are sold in various lengths, from hip-length to longer, jacket-styling. They are also offered in a wide range of colors and patterns, and with many different lining options- from quilted and insulated, fleece lined, and in some cases unlined. This makes the shirtjac the perfect transitional weather item, allowing you to choose the one that suits your personal taste along with your seasonal needs.
The shirtjac is an excellent layering piece. You can wear it over a T-shirt or henley for a casual look, or layer under a heavier coat during colder months.
Pair it with jeans or chinos for a laid-back, yet put-together outfit. Roll up the sleeves for a touch of casual elegance.
When heading outdoors, opt for a durable shirtjac made from rugged materials like canvas or waxed cotton. It'll provide essential protection without compromising style. Some even offer elbow patches for added protection.
For a campfire-ready ensemble, throw on your favorite shirtjac over a graphic tee. You'll stay cozy while embracing that rustic, outdoorsy vibe. Opt for non-synthetic options here to avoid burn holes from stray embers.

Mobility is critical for those long days. The Flint has knee articulation and an action gusset. A gusset panel is added to the stress points of a garment to help increase mobility. A crotch gusset (AKA Action Gusset) allows for more freedom of movement. Which prevents pants from grabbing and yanking tight against the crotch while you bend and work.
If you've ever searched for anything from best waterproof jackets or rain pants for hiking, you've probably seen the term DWR. Durable Water Repellent (aka DWR) is a coating added to fabrics to make them water resistant.

As avid outdoor enthusiasts, we at Mountain Khakis are always on the lookout for the best materials to use in our outdoor apparel. Nylon is one material we've come to love and trust for its durability and performance. In this blog post, we'll share the benefits of using nylon in outdoor clothes and why we typically choose it over polyester.
When it comes to outdoor activities, durability is key. Nylon is a highly durable material resistant to abrasion and tearing, making it perfect for outdoor apparel exposed to rough terrain and harsh conditions. In fact, nylon is so tough that it's often used in high-performance ropes, cords, and even seat belts! That's why we choose nylon for our pants, jackets, and other outdoor apparel that needs to withstand the elements.
Being comfortable while you're out in nature is crucial, and that's where nylon really shines. Nylon is highly breathable, meaning it allows air to circulate through the fabric, keeping you cool and comfortable even when you're working up a sweat. This is especially important in warmer climates, where overheating can lead to discomfort and dehydration.
When you're out in the wilderness, the weather can be unpredictable. That's why we choose nylon over polyester for our outdoor apparel - nylon is naturally water-resistant, making it perfect for rainy days or water activities like kayaking and rafting. Nylon fibers repel water, which means it dries faster than other materials, so you can stay comfortable even in wet conditions.
DWR coating is a common treatment applied to our nylon fabrics at Mountain Khakis to further enhance water-resistance. The coating creates a barrier on the surface of the fabric that causes water to bead up and roll off rather than soaking in.
Outdoor adventures can be dirty, but cleaning up after them doesn't have to be a hassle. Nylon is incredibly easy to clean and maintain, making it a great choice for outdoor apparel. It resists stains and odors, and can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth or thrown in the washing machine.
Springtime bass fishing, there's nothing quite like it. As the weather warms up and the snow starts to melt away, it's the perfect time to grab your gear and head out to the water for some of the best bass fishing of the year.
First things first, location is key. Look for areas with shallow water, like coves, creeks, and flats, where the water temperature is warmer than the surrounding areas. This is where that bass will be hanging out, getting ready to feed up for the spawn (pre-spawn). Though some still might not be ready to move up shallow. If that’s the case, you can find them hanging in the deeper areas close to shallow water.
Now, let's talk about technique. Soft plastic baits are a popular choice for springtime bass fishing, as they can be rigged in various ways and mimic the forage in the area. Worms, lizards, and creature baits are all great options. These baits can be fished slowly along the bottom to entice those bass to bite. Just remember to use natural colors, like green pumpkin or black and blue, to blend in with the environment.
When those water temps get around 55 degrees, you can start throwing topwater baits. Buzzbaits, poppers, and frogs can all be used to entice bass that is feeding near the surface. These lures are especially effective early in the morning or late in the evening when the water is calm, and the light is low. Just be ready for that heart-pumping moment when a bass explodes on your lure!
Remember to pay attention to the weather and water conditions. Springtime weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to come prepared not only with all the lures you will need but also with the right clothing. This time of the year, when you arrive at the lake in the morning, it will be chilly, but by the afternoon, it’s blazing hot.
During this time of the year, I wear the men’s Trail Chaser Shorts matched with the Men’s River Long Sleeve Woven Shirt. Both are light, quick drying, and with a UPF 30+, it allows you to fish comfortably without having to lay the sunscreen on. Another thing to remember to bring is a water-resistant jacket for those unexpected spring showers. The Men’s Mountain Rainier Jacket is my go-to. With sealed seams, a three-panel hood, and a vented body, you will stay dry and cool all day.
In the end, springtime bass fishing is all about enjoying the outdoors and having fun. Take your time, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the season. And who knows, you might just catch the biggest bass of your life. Tight Lines!
