Since 2008 the team has been a professional, UCI registered continental team, with a brief step back to Elite Amateur status in 2011 in order to maximize available sponsorship and take the best care of the riders. The addition of Jackson Hole Wyoming based Mountain Khakis in 2009, followed by the support of Southern California based Smartstop Self Storage in 2012 (Smartstop is now the title sponsor for 2013) has made it possible for the team to rack up a staggering number of victories and overall classification wins, as well as proving the worth of the original vision for the team by graduating riders on to top domestic and international teams.
Since 2009 this team has won both the overall and individual classifications in the season long, nationwide USA Crits criterium series, every year for four years running. Over the course of the breakout 2011 and 2012 seasons, the team added its first NRC (National Racing Calendar) win at the Labor Day Omnium in Anderson, SC, as well as victories at some of the most historic races in the US, as races like Athens Twilight, the Tour Of Somerville, and the Boston Mayor’s Cup were all added to the trophy case of what now has to be considered the dominant criterium squad racing in the US.
Team alumni have gone on to race for internationally renowned teams such as United Healthcare and Team Type 1, as well as domestic powerhouse teams including Optum Pro Cycling, Bissell Pro Cycling, Jamis, and BMC/Hincapie. This growing legacy has secured team Smartstop presented by Mountain Khakis a respected place in the American peloton, and the team is known nationwide as a proving ground for young professionals in the US.
Focusing on the extremely popular and crowd pleasing discipline of criterium racing allows the team to maintain a close relationship with its fan base, keep an eye on developing talent nationwide, and provide its sponsors with major exposure in every US market.
