What Is a Shirtjac?

what is a shirtjac?

At first glance, a shirtjac looks like a standard button-up shirt. It sports a collared neck, buttons, or snaps down the front, and often comes in various colors and patterns. However, upon closer inspection, you'll notice that a shirtjac is designed to be more like a jacket. It is thicker, sturdier, roomier, and more robust than your everyday button-up. In many cases, they even have on-seam or interior pockets, hence the name Shirtjac.

SHIRTJAC eXPLAINED

Whether you're strolling through a city park, embarking on a weekend adventure, or gathering around a campfire, a shirtjac offers the perfect blend of style, warmth, and comfort. Designed with layering in mind, it is a transitional-weather wardrobe essential, perfect for those in-between seasons when you need just the right amount of warmth without the bulk of a traditional jacket.

Shirtjacs are crafted from a variety of materials, with some common choices being cotton, flannel, wool, or even synthetic blends. The choice of material for the exterior, and for the lining, often dictates the shirtjac's suitability for different weather conditions. For example, a sherpa-lined, or quilted shirtjac might keep you cozy during chilly autumn evenings, while an un-lined cotton or wool one offers a more breathable option for milder weather.

One of the most appealing aspects of shirtjacs is their style versatility. They are sold in various lengths, from hip-length to longer, jacket-styling. They are also offered in a wide range of colors and patterns, and with many different lining options- from quilted and insulated, fleece lined, and in some cases unlined. This makes the shirtjac the perfect transitional weather item, allowing you to choose the one that suits your personal taste along with your seasonal needs.

how to wear a SHIRTJAC

01

LAYERING

The shirtjac is an excellent layering piece. You can wear it over a T-shirt or henley for a casual look, or layer under a heavier coat during colder months.

02

Rugged Sophistication

Pair it with jeans or chinos for a laid-back, yet put-together outfit. Roll up the sleeves for a touch of casual elegance.

03

Outdoor Adventures

When heading outdoors, opt for a durable shirtjac made from rugged materials like canvas or waxed cotton. It'll provide essential protection without compromising style. Some even offer elbow patches for added protection.

04

Campfire Cool

For a campfire-ready ensemble, throw on your favorite shirtjac over a graphic tee. You'll stay cozy while embracing that rustic, outdoorsy vibe. Opt for non-synthetic options here to avoid burn holes from stray embers.
